Spell It! is a structured series of phonic exercises that has evolved out of thirty years teaching experience mainly with dyslexic children - the last fifteen years as Head of Learning Support (SENCO) at a large private school. Spellings and curricula conform with UK practice; so colour not color etc., and Year 3 are seven to eight years old, Year 4 eight to nine years old... Year 8 are twelve to thirteen years old.
These lessons are best thought of as phonic anti-biotics! They work best when taken as a whole, not pick and mix nor out of sequence. They are graduated lessons designed specifically for those with literacy deficits and which build an edifice of rules based on previous lessons to provide a firm structure on which the pupil can rely. Many children with literacy problems lack confidence; these lessons will help restore it and their self-esteem through success where previously they failed.
To those without insight into the particular problems faced by dyslexic children (and adults!) these lessons may at first glance seem dull. However, as with any academic subject requiring rigour, a vital component of its teaching is imbuing it with as much fun and enjoyment as can reasonably be expected. Each lesson is therefore accompanied with suggestions of how this may be accomplished. The spelling sheets are the scientific component if you like; the suggestions are only some of the possibilities that the teacher as creative artist might care to explore.
