INTRODUCTION & NOTES

Some of the information here is peripheral to us LINKLATERs, but I have included all the information at my disposal as it may be of interest to those straying here from the genealogical slums.

Most of what little I know about the FLINTs, BELLs, and ROXBURGHs - as well as some passing insights on LINKLATERs - comes from "Notes" written by Naena and/or Evelyn ROXBURGH which they compiled for an Australian relative of theirs, Mona Benny. Where quoted, their use of "you" or "yours" refer to Mona Benny and "hers".

Most of the material on SOUNDYs and SCHAUMBURGs I shamelessly plundered from Sylvia Murphy's website. Sadly her website no longer exists, but she continues to quarry genealogical nuggets, especially those from Australian and/or Indian strata.

Information on the CUTHBERT side - including PALMER, GAUNTLETT and ANDREWS - came via Andrew Cuthbert.

I am poor on the distaff side. After my aunt Jo Boissard died, I helped her nephew Michael, the principle beneficiary of her will, to sort out some of the contents of her main residence, ‘Kingsbury’, Fen Ditton. There were a great many letters and photos which we tossed into a large brown trunk with the exception of anything that obviously related to my mother, Peg [Margaret Lilian Linklater née Boissard] who was Jo's sister. I have no idea what became of the contents of the trunk or other material relating to Boissards, Melvilles etc.

Naena and Evelyn's notes end thus;

EVELYN: Looking back at them all, two things impress me. One is the ability, talent and forcefulness of the women, as well as their great good looks. The men of the fourth generation were good looking and charming, but useless. Then they picked up again in your [Mona Benny's] father and the Linklater men.

The other thing is the pattern of the sea which runs through the whole story. It started with great-great grandfather, skipped a generation and began again with with Arthur and Val Linklater. Then Jim Linklater's son Barkley and Arthur's son Nelson, who chose the Navy during the War, and finally Nelson's son Duncan, [me!] who has gone to Pangbourne. Also there is Gordon with his love of sailing. Apart from the sea, teaching as a profession seems to have been the thing during the 3rd generation, but died out entirely with us all.

I have noted commonly used nicknames on individuals' pages. I have not bothered to note obvious diminutives - Jim for James etc - as we'd be here all night. Nor have I bothered to note alternate spellings but use those which appear to be generally accepted as accurate e.g SchaumBURG NOT SchaumBERG.

FUTURE INCLUSIONS AND UPDATES

It is my aim to try to include at least three good photographs of as many individuals as possible; one as a youngster (5 to 10 years), one as a mature young adult and one as an old bastard - if they make it that far. Apart from the general interest of such images, they may assist others to identify the subjects of photos they have. Adding the images will be the last thing to see to.

Individuals' pages are labelled according to the name with which they were born. So, information about Margaret Lilian Boissard who married Nelson Valdemar Linklater appears on "her" page, "BOISSARD, Margaret" in the "Boissard" section and not in the "Linklater" section. But of course her marriage etc is all noted and her children have their pages in the "LINKLATER" section.

This site is far from complete and, in the nature of such things, may never be. There are many gaps and uncertainties. Should you be able to correct any ommissions or errors, I would be delighted to hear from you. Email If you find any other faults, links not working, pages missing or have any other criticisms or suggestions I will also be glad to hear from you. I do not intend to say much about my own or younger generations apart from giving some basic facts. Let those who come after shoulder the burthen.

Duncan Linklater, Custos Rotulorum.
